GoGuardian Parent App- Reminder
GoGuardian Parent was created to help provide additional educational support to administrators and teachers by allowing families to see what sites and documents their children are accessing and providing families with additional internet controls at home. The app gives parents a bird's eye view of the apps and websites that their kids are on most often and provides control over school-issued devices during out-of-school hours. With this perspective, families can be made aware of what types of online behavior schools are seeing from students so they can all work together to encourage more effective online habits at home and at school. Please visit this webpage for more information about this app.

Hazen Highlanders Make the Most of Every Day
Arriving to class on time is important for setting students up for success. With the new trimester, we plan to increase our communication to families around student performance, attendance, and tardiness so that we can collectively encourage students to not only strive for five days of attendance but to make each of those days count by being in class from bell to bell and turning in their completed work. As such, families will begin receiving weekly notifications about these items in addition to their student's attendance. 4 common codes you may see in Skyward moving forward are listed below.
T= Tardy (arrived 10 minutes or less late to class)
L= Late (arrived over 10 minutes late to class)
W= Absence, unexcused (missed 50% or more of class)
E= Absence, excused
In addition to this communication, for every 5 tardies or 2 Ls, students will be issued a lunch detention. Families of students accumulating over 15 tardies or 6 Ls will be contacted by the administration. Please note that students that fail to serve their lunch detentions will be subject to additional consequences e.g. suspension of off campus privileges, extracurricular activities.
We hope that between these two interventions, we will increase the number of students arriving to class on time and that students experience increased academic success. Please note this begins this week with the tardy and late count beginning Wednesday.
Undocumented students and others can get state financial aid with the WASFA
Washington offers the Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) for people who aren’t eligible to file for federal financial aid, including undocumented students. Financial aid is money that can help you pay for more education after high school. Complete the WASFA to see if you are eligible.
Important info about the WASFA and its users:
- Learn more and apply online.
- Spanish on application: Instructions and form fields on the WASFA application are now written in both English and Spanish.
- State residency requirements now make it easier to get in-state tuition and state financial aid, making college or job training cost less. Many people who didn’t qualify before now do.
The WASFA is an application for state and institutional financial aid only. The WASFA is for people who are undocumented or who do not qualify for federal financial aid because of their immigration status, and can be used in limited circumstances by others who cannot or choose not to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You must meet state residency and program requirements to qualify.
Not sure whether you should use the FAFSA or the WASFA? Complete the WASFA questionnaire.
There are affordable college and training options for everyone, including students who are immigrants, are undocumented, or have DACA status. The first, best step is to apply for financial aid.

Message from Principal Landes
Welcome back after our short Thanksgiving break! We hope you all enjoyed the break with your loved ones and that you enjoyed some great food. I am very thankful to be a part of our community because of its investment in our children and the future. Not only did we pass a bond that will fund upgrades to Hazen but we also raised over 20,000 for families in our community that needed some help for Thanksgiving (see me getting egged below- it was a great hair day). I am proud to call myself a Highlander and have even more pride to be part of this phenomenal, supportive community.
Thank you all!

Hazen's Annual Thanksgiving Drive
Our annual Thanksgiving Drive is underway! Instead of asking for donations of instant mashed potatoes and canned green beans, we’re asking for grocery store gift cards or cash to buy them. Families will receive gift cards to approximate the costs of an average “turkey basket” as distributed in the past. Cash and gift card collection will happen from November 1-21. We have already received requests from 350 families who need our help. That means we need to raise a total of $26,250! Here’s how you can help:
- Donate by dropping cash or $25 gift cards off at Hazen High School
- Donate online here (Scroll to the bottom where it says "Non-Students, Inactive Students, and/or Donations," click register and donate!)
- Donate non-perishable food items to Hazen's main office. all food will go to Sustainable Renton’s free grocery store.

Trimester 2 Schedule Changes
Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 9th the forms for students to request schedule change to their Trimester 2 schedule will open.
- These schedule change request forms will be open for 2 weeks, and close on Wednesday, Nov. 23
- No student requested changes will be allowed after Nov. 23, and there won’t be an opportunity to request a schedule change once trimester 2 starts. Trimesters are short terms, so it’s important that students are in classes on the first day of the term!
- Student Requested Schedule Change Forms can be found on the Hazen Webpage -> Counseling Tab -> 2nd Trimester Requesting a Schedule Change.
- Please encourage your student to use these forms available online to request their schedule change (instead of emailing their counselor) as priority will be given to students who submit their request through the form.
Thanks so much for supporting our families!

NEW School Construction Measure- Information
Renton School District voters will decide on a school construction measure on their November 8, 2022 election ballot.
School districts in Washington State do not receive funding for large-scale school construction needs like adding new schools as our population grows or adding classrooms as we provide students with more hands-on learning opportunities like engineering and construction. Instead, school districts create long-range school construction plans and present smaller packages of immediate needs to be approved by local voters.
What’s on the Nov. 8, 2022 ballot for Renton Schools?
The construction measure on the Nov. 8, 2022 election ballot will allow the district to stay on track to make major repairs, replacements, and upgrades to keep our schools in top operating condition, while protecting taxpayer investments in our buildings and helping maintain high property values.
The package includes needed improvements to schools across the district:
Safety & Security
- Interior door hardware/lock updates
- New key system
- Main entry video intercoms
- Entryway improvements to provide front door line-of-sight for office staff
School Improvements
- Update seismic and structural systems in older buildings (retrofitting and modification of existing structures to make them more resistant to seismic activity, ground motion, or soil failure)
- Improvements and equipment replacement of school Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems
- Upgrades to electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems
- Upgrades to boilers and domestic hot water heaters
Purchase Property
- Identify and purchase about 40 acres for a future Renton High School site
Build New Renton High School
- Build a new high school facility for the Renton High School service area, providing a modern learning environment and equitable athletic opportunities for all students (read more below)
- We will build the new Renton High campus within district boundaries (location to be determined)
- We will not take down the current Renton High School (we will continue to find uses for this building)
- Learn more and watch a video presentation at www.rentonschools.us.

I. Caregiver Resources
Below are a variety of resources that caregivers can use to support their student throughout the year by staying informed. We highly recommend reviewing these tools and using and/or accessing them regularly.
- Canvas is our Learning Management System that teachers use to provide materials for their class. It is also a great for caregivers that would like to see what is happening in a class and the progress that their student is making. Check out how the guide to Setting up a Parent Observer Account in Canvas for more information.
- The GoGuardian app gives parents a bird's eye view of the apps and websites that their kids are on most often and provides control over school-issued devices during out-of-school hours. With this perspective, families can be made aware of what types of online behavior schools are seeing from students so they can all work together to encourage more effective online habits at home and at school. Here is more information on the app.
- The Hazen website includes our daily announcements to students, Hazen Highlights and our biweekly Monday memo to students. This is all located under the Hazen news tab on the website.
- Social Media is another wonderful way to stay up to date on all the many Hazen happenings. We are on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram if you would like to follow us.

- Football v. Juanita on Saturday at Lumen Field. Purchase tickets for the 7:10pm game here. Hazen Boosters is sponsoring rooter busses to the game! Please have your student register for the transportation here.

High Schools within the Renton School District use an A-F grading scale for most classes. At the beginning of each term, each teacher will specify in writing the student learning goals or standards for each respective course. Teachers will maintain accurate academic effort and community skills (as applicable) grades in the District gradebook on Skyward. The gradebook is set up based on a teacher’s professional judgement and may look different than the general gradebook below. Please reach out to your teacher for more information about grades and/or grading practices.

Homeroom
Homeroom is a 30-minute class, every Monday, to support students through their high school experience and post-high school plans. We deliver tools through Canvas that guide students through lessons which connect them with their values, strengths, passions, and long-term goals. It doesn’t just focus on the student’s goals for after high school, but is used to help students ensure they are leaning the life-skills necessary to reach their post-high school goals. Most students have just one homeroom teacher through their time at Hazen, and build relationships that last across trimesters.
We will be hosting an homeroom information session soon and would like to know what questions you all have about homeroom. Please submit your questions here.
