Information About Tri 1 Finals
This year students will have a final assessments in every one of their academic classes. The finals will be given on the last three days of the trimester. (Please see the schedule above and at the top of the newsletter. You can also find the schedules on the Hazen Webpage.) The expectation is that all students are expected to be present on these days to take their finals.
If you know that your student will not be present during one or more of the final days, they must complete a prearranged absence form at least 48 hours before the absence. Forms can be picked up in the main office. Students with prearranged absences must meet with their teachers and create a plan to take their exams BEFORE the end of the trimester.
If your student is absent on one or more final days for an excused reason, the expectation is that they reach out to their teachers immediately, to create a plan to make-up the missed final(s) during the week directly following the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend.
Students with unexcused absences and/or those who do not make-up their finale, or take their finals (at all) will receive a grade of 0 on that assessment.
Renton Salvation Army Food Bank (and other resources)
We know that all communities are being impacted by the recent Federal government shutdown and its impact on many in our community, including furloughed federal employees and families experiencing disruptions to SNAP benefits. We understand these challenges may create uncertainty and added stresses for many households. We are working with our Hazen Boosters and other local partners to help brainstorm ways for families within the Hazen community to come together to help support each other and will keep sharing updates as more ideas come about.
One local option right now includes visiting (if you need support) or donating money (if you can offer support) to our local Renton Salvation Army food bank. You can visit their donor page, or find the same page at this link: https://renton.salvationarmy.org/renton_corps/ (click on 'donate' at the top right corner of the page).
On campus at Hazen, we also have storage bins for the collection of non-perishable food items (canned goods and other packaged/shelf-stable foods) that families/students are invited and encouraged to bring in to donate toward the Renton Salvation Army food bank, as well. We are placing bins by our main entrance and by our counseling reception area, and we invite anyone who can share during this time of need to please consider doing so.
Additionally, there are several other programs available now for food resources:
- www.stmatthewsrenton.org/neighborhood-help
- www.seattlecommunityfridge.org
- www.ampleharvest.org www.washingtonconnection.org/home/exploreoptions.go
Important Reminder about Free and Reduced Meal Program:
All families are also strongly encouraged to complete the Child Nutrition and Education Benefit form to allow the district to continue to apply for the program next year and to help students and families receive important resources like: before and after school academic and enrichment programs; resources for classrooms; guidance and college counselors; health and wellness services, and more.
- Complete the form online in your Family Skyward Access account (look for the Food Service Application button), or
- Download the form here, complete and sign it, and email it to RSD.mealform@rentonschools.us or drop off at our school.
- We wish everyone a safe week and invite you to access these resources and encourage you to help wherever and however you can.

Reminders About New Cell Phone Policy
As a reminder for students and families, No Cell Bell to Bell means that at no point in time should a student have their phone out during class time. This includes if the student leaves class to use the restroom, go to the nurse's office, go to the library, or go to visit another class.
If students are seen out in the hallways during class time with their cell phones, staff will assign them a cell phone pouch for the remainder of the day, just like if they had their phone out in class.
The following are approved times when students may have their phones:
- during passing periods between class
- at lunch
- before school (prior to 7:20 bell)
- after school (after 2:03 bell)
- at the specific direction of their teacher (i.e. if there is a need to use a cell phone to translate, or to do a class activity)
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to your student's administrator, or you can go here to view the district's policy in it's complete form.

Attendance Matters
Regular school attendance is essential for your child’s success. Students who attend consistently feel better about school, stay on track academically, and are more likely to graduate and succeed after high school.
Why Attendance Matters:
- Absences (excused or unexcused) starting in kindergarten can cause students to fall behind.
- Missing just 2 days per month (18+ days/year) greatly increases risk of academic struggles.
- Consistent tardiness to school may lead to poor attendance.
- Chronic absenteeism by 6th grade is a strong warning sign for dropping out.
- By 9th grade, attendance predicts graduation better than test scores.
Our Promise:
We know challenges may arise. If your student struggles with attendance, please contact us. Our staff (nurse, counselor, teachers, attendance office) are here to help identify barriers and provide support. We will track attendance and communicate with you as they happen.
What We Need From You:
- Call the school if your child will be absent. - Work with us to develop a plan if attendance becomes a concern.
- Understand that state law (RCW 28A.225) requires children ages 8–17 to attend school (younger if enrolled). It requires us to get your signature to verify that you have received this letter.
Key Policies:
- 3 unexcused absences in a month → required family conference.
- 5 excused absences in a month or 10 in a year → school will contact you for a meeting (unless excused by doctor/notes).
- 7 unexcused absences in a month or 15 in a year → school must file a petition with juvenile court. You and your student may need to appear in juvenile court if your student continues to be truant.
How You Can Help:
- Talk with your child about the importance of attendance.
- Keep routines consistent (bedtime, morning prep).
- Schedule appointments outside school hours, when possible.
- If possible, avoid extended trips when school is in session.
- Monitor attendance—missing 9+ days risks falling behind.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your student's attendance, please reach out to our Attendance Specialist or our Dean of Students.

School Picture Day Packets are Ready for Pick-Up
Just in time for the holiday season when all families want to exchange photos of their kids -- School Pictures Packets are HERE!

The ASB Office is open before school, during lunch, and after school.
Please Drive Safely in our Parking Lots and Neighborhoods
Dear Highlanders and Families,
As the days are getting shorter, the mornings are getting darker, and the roads are getting more and more wet - it's time that we start thinking about our driving habits and making sure we are safe in our parking lots and neighborhoods.
Here are some safety tips for driving during this time of year:
- make sure your lights are fully on - sometimes with newer cars, the auto-light feature will turn on the lights in the front of the car, but not the rear lights. Please make sure your lights are fully on when you are driving (this is good practice even if it's bright and sunny outside)
- pay attention to the speed limits - most parking lots have a speed limit of 10mph, and all school zones are 20mph. Slow down, when driving in parking lots and school zones.
- give yourself extra room - remember to leave room between you and the car in front of you, you never know when someone is going to stop suddenly, and if you don't have enough time to react, you could end up bumping into them.
- a lot of times our parking lots are dark in the morning and even with de-icer they can still be super slick and it can be very hard to see ice and water on the road. PLEASE DRIVE SLOW AND CAREFUL in our parking lots.

Knife Sharpening
Support the 2026 Senior Graduation Event and get your knives sharpened any time prior to Thanksgiving! Any time is a great time to have your knives returned to that “just like new” level of sharpness!
Book time with Gabe Harris to have your knives sharpened and returned to you the next day. Here's how it works: We are asking for donations between $1-$2 per inch of steel sharpened. Once we measure all the cutting edges, we will provide you with the total amount and collect your donation when returning your knives.
It's straightforward, and your contribution will make a significant impact to the event. Email gabe.harris1@gmail.com or text 719-393-2407
Onsite date: November 20 from 2:15-5:30 in the Hazen Cafeteria. Bring your knives and have them sharpened while you wait.

A Message from the Health Room
Dear Hazen Families,
It is time to plan for the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year. This critical medical information will help ensure your student is as safe as possible when returning to school or starting athletics next year.
What should you do now?
To plan for the new school year and activities/athletics, please review the following. Clinics can be booked months in advance. Make an appointment now to complete in one visit:
- Individual Health Plans (IHP) for Asthma, Diabetes, Life Threatening Allergies, Seizures, and other life-threatening conditions (complete yearly). Look for a blank plan to be mailed to your home address in May. https://www.rentonschools.us/learning-and-teaching/health-services/health-services-forms
- Medication authorization paperwork for medicine taken at school (complete yearly)
- Sports physicals if your student will play sports (complete every two years) https://downloads.aap.org/AAP/PDF/PPE-Physical-Examination-Form-rev.pdf
- Vaccinations – Sign up for myirmobile.com to see if your student needs any school required immunizations. https://myirmobile.com/
Then what?
- Completed health plans and medication authorizations can be delivered to Hazen with the needed medication before the start of school or athletics in August. *See below
- Athletics - All required health forms for the new school year must be submitted before the start of fall season/tryouts/practice sessions in August.
- * Early option - you are also able to submit forms at the end of this school year if your healthcare provider has signed them after May 15, 2025*
- If your child has previously had an Epi-pen or inhaler at school, and no longer needs the medication at school, we MUST have a note from the doctor indicating that an epi-pen or inhaler is no longer required.
- All Running Start students - if you plan to be on campus for any reason during the school year, and you have a life-threatening health condition, you need an updated yearly health plan. Reasons to be on campus can include meeting with your counselor, clubs, and other activities that are part of Hazen's bigger student experience. If you are unsure if you should complete the health plan, please contact the health room.
Please contact the health room (425.204.4202 or kristin.freer@rentonschools.us) with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your help in making the start of the next school year excellent.
Message from Hazen Health Room
Hello Hazen families,
It is exciting to be planning for the end of the school year on June 24. We will be attempting to deliver emergency medications to students in class on the last day of school, but it is not always possible. We wanted to offer other options to secure the pick-up of medications if that planning doesn't work, or if pick-up in person is needed (some medications will need picked up by parent only).
- We will assume your student has permission to take the emergency medications home with them unless you notify the health room by June 23 of your preference to pick it up yourself.
- The health room staff will be in the health room until 2pm on the last day of school if you prefer to stop by then.
- The Hazen front office will be available June 25-26 from 7am-3pm for another option to pick up medication. Please email Hazen office manager Tessa Umetsu at tessa.umetsu@rentonschools.us or call the front office at 425.204.4200 for more information or to schedule later in the summer for medication pick up.
- The health room will again be open intermittently after August 11, 2025 for in-person needs until the first day of school on August 28th . You can contact me by email at kristin.freer@rentonschools.us after August 3rd if needed.
- The medications left in the health room will be considered abandoned and disposed of if I haven't heard from the family by August 22, 2025.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns with our planning for medication return at the end of the school year. We hope you have a great summer!

Hazen Booster seeks a Social Media Chair
The Hazen Booster Club is seeking a volunteer to join our Board this year as our Social Media Chair.
Our prior Social Media chair, Trina Sooy, has taken on the role of Co-President and thus left a vacancy that we need to fill.
Responsibilities of the Social Media chair include:
- Create and post content on Boosters social media pages - Instagram and Facebook
- Create weekly "Booster Buzz" correspondence to be sent out to Booster Club membership
- Attend Booster Club monthly meetings
- Assist in Booster Club activities if and when available
- Training will be provided; however, a good understanding of how to use social media platforms is desired. Total weekly time requirement is 2-5 hours.
Please help us find someone who can fill this spot!
We need your help!
One of the many ways the Hazen Boosters fundraise is by selling spirit wear at varsity football games.
We are seeking two volunteers to help load the spirit wear at Hazen, transporting it to Memorial Stadium, and setting up for sales. During the game, we sell Hazen Boosters spirit wear along with various team items.
Once the game is over, we’ll pack everything up and return it to Hazen.
Click the link below to sign up and help us out at these games—we’d love to have you on the team!
If you're interested in helping at the football games, please email:

Student Drop-off AND Pick-Up - additional update! - NO private vehicles in bus lane
Hello Highlanders!
While this is a partial repeat of an earlier message, please read this entire message again as it includes amended information related to student PICK-UP by private vehicles at the end of the school-day.
We have continued to notice the congestion and some unsafe situations with private vehicles in the main parking lot in front of the school just off Hoquiam Ave during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up, so I am sharing this updated guidance as a way to help everyone drop off and pick up students as safely and efficiently as possible.
I am including a labeled map of the main parking lot to show what areas are to be avoided by private vehicles, both in the morning and afternoon. The ONLY place a private vehicle should enter when coming onto campus from the north end of Hoquiam is immediately into the OUTER section of the parking lot that has enough room for everyone to "Make 2 Lanes" and allow for a slow and steady flow of drop-offs and pick-ups to occur. I have indicated areas to be avoided with larger RED X's and the area to use for our "Make 2 Lanes" protocol with GREEN lines and WHITE dotted divider lines showing how the space needs to be used to ""Make 2 Lanes".
We have also been placing signage in the mornings and will be adding this in afternoons asking private vehicle drivers to please plan ahead for how you plan to EXIT the parking lot, and if you plan to turn RIGHT (southbound on Hoquiam) upon exiting, then you should use the right side of the green lanes (the green lines/arrows shown closer to the building, but still in the OUTER 2-lane section of the parking lot). If you plan to turn LEFT (northbound on Hoquiam) upon exiting, you should use the left side of the green lanes (the green arrows farther from the building). And please keep in mind, I am respectfully asking everyone to exercise PATIENCE and KINDNESS in our driving around the school... we want ALL students to get home safely. Each side of the 2-lane zone might flow at different speeds since it can take extra time for traffic to flow during the end of the day school-wide-dismissal from school, especially for drivers exiting to the left/northbound onto Hoquiam to get back out of the parking lot (I have noted this area with YELLOW lines/arrows at the bottom of the map where patience is required!). In fact, I recommend everyone consider using the right lane and turning southbound if possible, to reduce left-turn congestion.
Lastly, please note there is a curb near the front of the right side of the 2-lane section where you absolutely CANNOT park, linger, loiter, or leave your vehicle as doing so causes a major backup of the whole 2-lane process. I have identified this area on the map below with smaller red X's to show where NOT to stop/park/loiter as you are progressing in the right side lane.
By using this system, everyone in private vehicles should be able to move through the OUTER zone of the main parking lot, pause as necessary to allow your student to safely exit or enter your vehicle, and be organized based on which way you want to EXIT the parking lot as you return to Hoquiam after dropping off or picking up your student. (Speaking of WHERE exactly to let your student out of your vehicle or asking your student to aim to be picked up, I recommend doing this right near the crosswalk, noted by BLUE arrows in the diagram, that cuts side-to-side all the way from the sidewalk of Hoquiam across to our building sidewalks).
If you have any questions, please reach out. And we will have staff out front helping to direct this for the next couple days before and after school as we all get used to this updated system.
Thanks!
Craig Cooper
Principal, Hazen HS

Notice re: construction tool noises - may sound like short, loud bang sounds
Hello Highlanders!
As you are aware, we have extensive construction happening on the Hazen High School campus this school year and continuing through 2028. The needed work includes modernization of the library and nine existing science classrooms and associated spaces, seismic upgrades of the building, roof replacement, upgrades to the HVAC system, and more.
I want to make everyone aware that soon work crews will start using powder-actuated tools to embed fasteners into concrete using a small powder charge. This is a common construction practice which is much faster and quieter than drilling holes in the concrete to install lag bolts and other fasteners (which would be far more disruptive during the school day). The reason for this heads-up is that the sound made by this work and the use of these tools includes a short but loud "bang!" which could be mistaken by those unfamiliar with construction as a car backfiring or gun fire. We wanted to ensure our staff, students, and school-wide community knew of this work ahead of time so that if you hear the sound, you’re prepared and don’t mistakenly call 911. Please contact our main office at 425-204-4201 if you ever have any immediate questions, or reach out to me via email if your question allows for a 24 to 48-hour response time.
I am grateful to everyone's demonstrations of patience as we know this construction activity is disruptive in the moment, and we continue to be extremely grateful to the voters throughout the district who approved this work on the November 2022 election ballot.
Sincerely,
Craig Cooper
Principal
Hazen High School

Once the game is over, we’ll pack everything up and return it to Hazen.
Click the link below to sign up and help us out at these games—we’d love to have you on the team!
If you're interested in helping at the football games, please email:

Jody Shuman - Assistant Principal (last names A-F)
Nate Meyer - Assistant Principal (last names G-M)

Please see Ms. Dodson in the ASB office for your picture packet if you ordered one from Dorian Studios.

Washington State Healthy Youth Survey 2025
Hazen students are participating in the Washington State Healthy Youth Survey this fall. The survey will be given to students in Grades 10 and 12 between October 6 – 24.
The Healthy Youth Survey includes questions related to physical activity, unintentional and intentional injury, substance use, interpersonal relationships, school experiences, risk and protective factors, and access to school-based services. Survey results are used by schools, communities, and State agencies to plan programs to support our youth and reduce their risks.
Participation in the survey is voluntary and steps are taken to ensure student privacy. There are no codes used to link a survey back to a student. If you wish to have your student opt-out of this survey or have any questions, please email Artise Burton, Dean of Students, at artise.burton@rentonschools.us.
PSAT Scores Are Now Available
All students who took the PSAT Test on Oct. 9th can find their scores in BigFuture.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Kelly Jones.
