The final Chapter...
...HAS YET TO BE WRITTEN
As Hazen and the Highlanders move into the second half of our century, we are facing enormous changes. The school day has been re-configured into a 5-period day of 70-minute periods. The semester system of 18 weeks has been replaced by three, 12-week trimesters. This philosophical shift away from the traditional 6 period day harkens back to Hazen’s original schedule when staff tried innovative ways to teach Highlanders to be self-directed in a modern society. Additionally, new electives pepper the registration handbook – classes like Crime and Justice, Sports Literature, Java Game Programming, Baking and Pastry, and Yoga and Pilates classes will increase student learning as was only imagined by our superintendent, Dr. Hobbs, when Hazen first opened. There has also been a return if an old favorite – Creative Writing is listed as a Language Arts option once again!
Hazen’s story will continue as we will celebrate our 50th Anniversary in September, 2018. There are so many stories that need to be shared, so many events that must be chronicled, and so many of you from whom we have not heard. The foregoing is a simple summary of those early years. It is not a complete history of the vibrant institution that has flourished in the Highlands, but it is a summary of our beginnings – who we were – which informs us who we are.
